Climate Change: A Global Challenge to Sustainable Development

Climate change―driven by human activities that alter the Earth’s atmospheric composition―has become a defining crisis of our time, threatening sustainable development and human security across the globe. Since the adoption of the Paris Agreement, the international community has intensified its collaborative efforts to address this systemic risk through proactive cooperation.

While climate change is a global phenomenon, developing nations are disproportionately impacted by its effects. Because these countries are both highly exposed and inherently vulnerable, the increasing frequency of climate hazards poses a severe risk to their socio-economic foundations.

Recognizing this urgency, the landscape of international development cooperation is expanding beyond conventional assistance to incorporate climate risk management.

Strategic Approach to Climate Change

Our strategy toward a sustainable future is built on two fundamental pillars: Mitigation, where we work to reduce the root causes of global warming, and Adaptation, where we protect and prepare our communities to minimize the impact of changes already underway.

Mainstreaming Climate Action in EDCF Operations

To fulfill international obligations under the Paris Agreement and promote sustainable development in partner countries, EDCF is proactively addressing climate change risks. In particular, we have implemented a robust 'Climate Change Impact Response Framework'. This framework enables us to identify and analyze potential climate risks and vulnerabilities from the initial stages of project identification. Consequently, we establish and manage comprehensive measures to prevent or reduce these risks throughout the entire project lifecycle.
